The Weimar Republic and Hitler's Rise to Power

The Weimar Republic $1919-1933$ was Germany's attempt at democracy after World War I, but it faced massive problems from day one. The president held enormous power - he could dismiss parliament, control the army, and use Article 48 to declare emergencies (which happened 136 times!). Political parties even had their own private armies, turning disagreements violent.

Hyperinflation destroyed people's lives starting in 1922. By 1923, a single egg cost 80 million marks, and 10% of Germans were unemployed. Meanwhile, anti-Semitism spread through fabricated stories like the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," which falsely claimed Jews wanted world domination.

Hitler used this chaos brilliantly. After his failed 1923 revolution landed him in prison, he wrote Mein Kampf, blaming Jews for Germany's problems. The Nazis' simple message was "the system is broken - we can fix it." They bought newspapers, held massive rallies, and used the swastika symbol everywhere.

Key Point: The Great Depression (1929) was Hitler's golden ticket - as unemployment soared and people lost hope, they turned to extremist solutions.

From Chancellor to Dictator

When Hitler became chancellor in January 1933, he was actually quite vulnerable - the president could still dismiss him at any time. But he moved fast to grab total control through a series of calculated moves.

The Reichstag Fire in February 1933 was his first big break. When the parliament building burned down, Hitler blamed the Communists and convinced President Hindenburg to give him emergency powers. He immediately arrested 4,000 Communists and terrified voters before the March elections.

Even after the March 1933 elections, the Nazis didn't have a majority, so they partnered with nationalists to control parliament. The Enabling Act in March 1933 was the death blow to democracy - it gave Hitler power to make laws without parliament's approval.

By July 1933, all other political parties were banned. Hitler then eliminated enemies within his own party during the Night of Long Knives (June 1934). When President Hindenburg died in August 1934, Hitler combined the roles of chancellor and president to become Führer - Germany's absolute dictator.

Remember: Democracy disappeared gradually through "legal" means - Hitler used the system's own rules to destroy it from within.
