Elizabeth's Major Challenges Upon Taking the Throne
Elizabeth walked into a proper nightmare when she became queen. The religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants had been raging throughout the Reformation, with her predecessors Mary I and Edward VI constantly switching the country's official religion back and forth.
Mary I had made things particularly brutal by burning Protestants alive for their beliefs. This created massive rebellions and left the country deeply divided. Elizabeth, raised Protestant, knew she had to find a way to bring peace without sparking more violence.
Foreign relations were equally terrifying. Scotland was controlled by Mary Queen of Scots, a devout Catholic who many believed had a stronger claim to England's throne. Meanwhile, Spain under Philip II had become incredibly wealthy from conquering the New World and remained fiercely Catholic.
The only saving grace was that Spain and France absolutely hated each other. This prevented them from forming an alliance that could have crushed England completely. Elizabeth would need to play these European powers against each other to survive.
Key Point: Elizabeth inherited £300,000 in debt (massive for the time) due to expensive wars with France, plus widespread poverty and unemployment from terrible harvests.
Personal Challenges: Marriage, Gender, and Legitimacy
Elizabeth faced impossible choices about marriage that could destroy her reign either way. If she married an Englishman, the powerful Privy Council would resent being ruled by someone they saw as beneath them. If she chose a foreigner, England would get dragged into European wars and politics.
Even worse, marriage meant losing her power entirely - wives were expected to obey their husbands completely. But staying single meant the Tudor dynasty would die with her, leaving England without a clear heir.
Gender prejudice made everything harder. Society viewed women as weak and inferior, completely incapable of leading armies or making tough political decisions. Mary I's chaotic rule had only reinforced these sexist attitudes, making many nobles doubt whether any woman could govern effectively.
The legitimacy crisis was perhaps most dangerous of all. Catholics refused to recognise Elizabeth as the rightful queen because her parents' marriage had been declared invalid by the Catholic Church. They believed Mary Queen of Scots should rule instead, creating a constant threat of invasion or uprising.
Remember: These weren't just political problems - they were survival challenges that could have ended Elizabeth's reign before it properly began.
