Hippocrates & Galen: Ancient Medical Pioneers

Back in ancient times, doctors believed your health depended on keeping four special body fluids - called humours - perfectly balanced. This Theory of the Four Humours might sound bizarre now, but it was actually quite clever for its time.

The four humours each had their own personality: phlegm (cold and wet, linked to winter), blood (hot and wet, connected to spring), yellow bile (hot and dry, tied to summer), and black bile (cold and dry, associated with autumn). When these got out of whack, you'd fall ill.

Hippocrates wasn't just any doctor - he was like the founding father of medicine. He created the Hippocratic Oath that doctors still take today, promising to help their patients above all else. His detailed medical books became the go-to textbooks for centuries, making him the first person to properly record symptoms and treatments.

Galen took things further by actually cutting open pigs to study how bodies worked (humans were off-limits for religious reasons). He discovered that the brain controlled nerves and developed the Theory of Opposites - basically, if you were too hot, you'd need something cold to balance you out.

Quick Fact: Galen was so brilliant that he became the personal surgeon to gladiators and even treated Roman emperors!
