The Problem with No Clear Heir
You might think having no son automatically causes chaos, but it's actually more complicated than that. Edward the Confessor's lack of a male heir definitely contributed to the 1066 succession crisis, but it wasn't the main problem.
Medieval England had established customs where kings' sons inherited the throne - just look at how King Cnut's sons took over after him. But when there's no son? The rules become murky. Sometimes the nearest blood relative would inherit, other times the Witan (the king's council) would choose, or battles would decide the outcome.
This uncertainty opened the door for multiple people to claim they deserved the crown. Without clear customs to follow, anyone with even a distant connection to royal blood could make a case for themselves.

The Real Problem: Too Many Promises
Here's where things get messy - Edward the Confessor apparently promised the throne to several different people! This created way more problems than simply not having a son.
William of Normandy claimed Edward promised him the throne around 1051 when the Godwinson family was in exile. Meanwhile, Harold Godwinson insisted Edward named him heir on his deathbed (even the pro-Norman Bayeux Tapestry shows Edward reaching out to Harold). Edward also sent bishops to find his nearest blood relative, Edgar the Aetheling, suggesting he might have wanted family to inherit after all.
The three main claimants - William, Harold Godwinson, and Harald Hardrada - were all powerful, wealthy men with strong armies and genuine claims. Hardrada had a claim through an old treaty between previous kings, whilst William even had the Pope's support for his claim.
Though 14-year-old Edgar was probably the rightful heir by blood, the Witan feared he couldn't protect England from Viking and Norman invasions.
