GCSE History: The Making of America

America's Early Expansion (1789-1833)
Right after gaining independence from Britain in 1789, America was hungry for more land - and they got it in some pretty dramatic ways. The biggest game-changer was the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, where they basically bought 530 million acres from France for just $15 million (imagine getting that much land for the price of a few fancy houses today!).
Slavery played a huge role in this expansion too. When Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793, it made cotton production way more profitable, which meant plantation owners desperately wanted more land for their crops.
President Andrew Jackson made things even more intense with the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This forced Native Americans off their ancestral lands to make room for white settlers, leading to massive conflicts and suffering that would shape American history forever.
Quick Fact: The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of America overnight - talk about a successful shopping trip!
The Plains Indians, especially the Dakota Sioux, had their own incredible culture that was perfectly adapted to life on the vast grasslands. They were absolutely brilliant at tracking buffalo herds on horseback and believed the land had a spirit that couldn't be bought or sold - a belief that would clash dramatically with American expansion.

The Great Migration West
Economic disaster in 1837 sent Americans racing westward when banks collapsed in the east, leaving people desperate for new opportunities. Clever advertisements promised amazing farming opportunities out west, and explorers like Lewis and Clark had already mapped the routes to get there.
The Mormons' journey to Utah shows just how far people would go for religious freedom. After their founder Joseph Smith was killed by a mob in 1847, Brigham Young led thousands of followers along the dangerous Oregon Trail to Salt Lake City, where they tried (unsuccessfully) to create their own state.
California's Gold Rush in 1848 absolutely transformed the west coast. Whilst some people struck it rich mining gold, the real winners were often the clever business people like Levi Strauss, who made fortune selling denim trousers to miners. San Francisco exploded into a major trading city almost overnight.
The Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1858 brought over 100,000 white migrants into Cheyenne territory, leading to new settlements like Denver. However, many prospectors faced starvation and incredibly harsh conditions - the reality was much tougher than the golden dreams that brought them west.
Remember: Most people didn't actually get rich from gold - they made money from the businesses that supported the miners!

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
