Understanding the Plains Indian Wars

You're about to dive into some of the most significant conflicts in American history. The Plains Indian Wars weren't just random battles - they were part of a larger story about land, gold, broken promises and survival.

These conflicts happened because white settlers and gold prospectors kept breaking treaties to get into Native American territory. When gold was discovered in places like Colorado, Montana and the Black Hills, thousands of people ignored existing agreements and invaded tribal lands.

The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 was supposed to create peace, but it was repeatedly violated. This treaty promised Native tribes certain territories, but whenever valuable resources were found, the government either ignored the treaty completely or forced new, worse agreements on the tribes.

Quick Tip: Remember that most of these wars started because of gold discoveries and broken treaties - this pattern repeats throughout the period.

What makes these conflicts particularly tragic is that Native tribes were often just trying to survive. Their crops failed, promised food supplies didn't arrive, and their traditional hunting grounds were being destroyed by railway construction and cattle ranching.

Major Conflicts: Little Bighorn and the Ghost Dance

The Battle of Little Bighorn (1876) was the most famous Plains Indian victory, but it ultimately made things worse for Native tribes. When gold was found in the Black Hills in 1874, prospectors broke treaties and invaded Sioux territory.

Chiefs Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse decided to fight back, saying "the whites wanted a war, and we will give it to them." General Custer's 600 men faced 2,000 Native warriors and were completely wiped out because Custer foolishly split his forces and left his heavy weapons behind.

The Ghost Dance movement (1890) gave desperate tribes hope when a Plains Indian named Wovoka had visions promising that dead Native Americans would return and floods would sweep away white settlers. This spiritual movement spread rapidly between tribes.

Remember: The Ghost Dance was about hope and unity, but the US government saw it as a threat to their control.

However, this hope ended tragically at Wounded Knee (December 1890). When the 7th Cavalry tried to confiscate weapons from Chief Big Foot's group, someone fired a shot in the confusion. The massacre that followed killed 250 Native Americans, mostly women and children, marking the end of armed Native American resistance.

Earlier Conflicts and Their Devastating Consequences

Red Cloud's War (1866-68) started when the Sioux got fed up with gold prospectors using the Bozeman Trail through their territory. Red Cloud brilliantly lured Captain Fetterman into a trap, killing all 80 of his men, which forced the government to negotiate the Fort Laramie Treaty.

The Sand Creek Massacre (November 1864) shows how brutal these conflicts became. Chief Black Kettle was actually waiting to sign a peace treaty when Colonel Chivington's men attacked his peaceful camp, killing 150 people and mutilating bodies for trophies.

Little Crow's War (1862) began because the Dakota Sioux were literally starving - their crops had failed and the government had stopped sending promised food supplies. Little Crow led desperate attacks that killed 700 settlers and soldiers.

Key Point: These weren't just military defeats - they were cultural destruction. After each conflict, surviving Native Americans lost more land, freedom and traditional ways of life.

The consequences were always devastating for Native tribes. After Little Crow's War, 400 Sioux were sentenced to death (though only 38 were executed), and survivors were sent to barren reservations where 400 more died in the first winter alone. By 1890, Manifest Destiny was complete - the government controlled all Native American territory, and tribes were completely dependent on government support to survive.
