The Road to War and Early Strategies

You've probably heard that WWI started with an assassination, but the tensions had been building for years. The main causes can be remembered with the acronym M.A.I.N: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism - these forces turned Europe into a powder keg waiting to explode.

Before the actual war kicked off, several crises nearly sparked conflict. The Moroccan crises (1905 and 1911) showed Germany trying to challenge France's growing power, whilst the Balkan crisis (1908) saw Austria and Russia competing for territory left behind by the Ottoman Empire. Each time, countries backed down because they weren't quite ready for a full-scale war.

Everything changed on 28th June 1914 when Franz Ferdinand, the Austrian heir, was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand gang. This single gunshot triggered the alliance system and plunged Europe into war within weeks.

Germany thought they had the perfect plan - the Schlieffen Plan aimed to quickly defeat France by marching through Belgium, then turn around and crush Russia. However, Belgium didn't surrender easily, Britain joined to protect Belgian neutrality, and the plan collapsed into deadly trench warfare and stalemates.

Remember: The Schlieffen Plan's failure led to the trench warfare that defined much of WWI's horror.

Major Battles That Defined the War

Once trench warfare began, both sides launched massive offensives trying to break the deadlock, but these battles became synonymous with unprecedented casualties and minimal gains.

The Battle of Verdun FebruaryDecember1916February-December 1916 earned the grim title of WWI's longest battle. Germany attacked the Western Front, initially capturing 8km of territory, but Britain counter-attacked and regained 3km. After nearly a year of fighting, neither side had achieved victory - just enormous losses.

July 1st, 1916 marked the start of the Battle of the Somme, known as the bloodiest battle of the war. Over one million men were killed or wounded on both sides, yet the front lines barely moved. This battle perfectly represents the futile nature of trench warfare.

The Battle of Passchendaele became infamous as the muddiest battle, where more soldiers died from drowning in mud than from enemy fire. Constant rain turned the battlefield into a swamp, making movement nearly impossible and adding a horrific new dimension to warfare.

At sea, the Battle of Jutland saw Britain's Royal Navy clash with Germany's fleet using powerful Dreadnought battleships. Although Britain lost more ships (14 vs 11), they maintained their naval blockade of Germany, slowly starving the country of essential supplies.

The war's final phase saw Germany's desperate Ludendorff Offensive using poison gas and intense bombardments, followed by the Allies' decisive 100-day offensive that finally broke German resistance and ended the war.

Key Point: These battles show how WWI became a war of attrition - victory went to whoever could endure the longest, not who had the best tactics.
