Elizabeth I: Early Life and Background

Elizabeth's childhood was marked by tragedy from the very start. Born in 1533 at Greenwich, her world turned upside down when her mother Anne Boleyn was executed in 1536 - Elizabeth was just three years old. Henry VIII immediately declared her illegitimate, stripping away her claim to the throne.

Despite this rocky beginning, Elizabeth received an exceptional education under Catherine Parr, Henry's sixth wife. She studied theology, art, literature, music, and multiple languages, developing the sharp intellect that would later make her one of England's greatest monarchs. Her Protestant beliefs were strongly influenced by her studies of the English Bible and rejection of Catholic transubstantiation.

The Third Act of Succession in 1544 restored Elizabeth's place in the line of succession, but her troubles weren't over. After Henry's death, she lived with Catherine Parr and her new husband Thomas Seymour. Rumours of an inappropriate relationship between Elizabeth and Seymour forced her to leave, and when Seymour was later executed for treason, it made Elizabeth deeply cautious about relationships with men.
