When Elizabeth became queen at 21, she faced massive problems that would have crushed weaker rulers. England was £300,000 in debt, coins were worthless due to wars with France, and powerful enemies surrounded the country.
Elizabeth proved herself brilliant at problem-solving. She sold crown land and cut royal expenses in half to tackle the debt. When France and Spain ended their war, threatening England with invasion, she made peace by signing the Treaty of Troyes in 1564, cleverly recognising that Calais belonged to France rather than fighting an expensive war.
The Religious Settlement was Elizabeth's masterstroke for uniting a divided country. The Act of Supremacy made her head of the Church of England, whilst the Act of Uniformity standardised church services. This compromise kept most people happy - Catholics could still see familiar rituals, whilst Protestants got their reformed church.
Key Point: Elizabeth's religious settlement worked because 80% of clergy accepted it, and most ordinary people attended church even if they privately held different beliefs.
However, challenges emerged from both Puritans and Catholics. Puritans wanted simpler church services without special vestments, leading to the Vestment Controversy where 37 Puritan priests lost their jobs. Catholics faced increasing pressure, especially after the Pope told them to stop attending Church of England services in 1570.

Mary Queen of Scots became Elizabeth's biggest headache when she fled to England in 1568. As Elizabeth's Catholic cousin with a strong claim to the throne, Mary was like a magnet for every Catholic plot against Elizabeth.
Elizabeth faced an impossible choice with Mary. Helping her regain the Scottish throne would anger Protestant Scottish lords. Handing her over could provoke France to war. Letting her go abroad might trigger foreign invasions. So Elizabeth kept Mary imprisoned in comfortable captivity - a decision that backfired spectacularly.
Three major plots nearly brought down Elizabeth's reign. The Ridolfi Plot (1571) aimed to replace Elizabeth with Mary and restore Catholicism, leading to Norfolk's execution. The Throckmorton Plot (1583) planned a French invasion, resulting in the Bond of Association - anyone plotting against Elizabeth would face execution for treason.
Key Point: The Babington Plot (1586) was Elizabeth's final straw - Walsingham's spies intercepted letters proving Mary's direct involvement in planning Elizabeth's assassination.
Francis Walsingham became Elizabeth's 'spymaster general', creating an intelligence network across Europe. His spies used torture and code-breaking to uncover plots, making England far more secure. When Mary was finally executed in 1587 for treason, it sent shockwaves across Europe and gave Spain another reason to plan invasion.

Relations between England and Spain collapsed completely by the 1580s due to religious rivalry, commercial competition, and political conflicts. Philip II of Spain saw Protestant England as a threat to Catholic Europe, whilst Elizabeth supported Dutch Protestant rebels against Spanish rule.
English privateers like Sir Francis Drake made things worse by raiding Spanish treasure ships. Drake's voyage around the world (1577-80) brought back £400,000 in stolen Spanish gold and silver. Elizabeth's decision to knight Drake was a deliberate insult to Spain, showing she supported these 'legal pirates'.
When Elizabeth signed the Treaty of Nonsuch in 1585, promising military support to Dutch rebels, war became inevitable. Drake's raid on Cadiz in 1587 - called 'singeing the King of Spain's beard' - delayed the Spanish Armada by a year and gave England crucial preparation time.
The Spanish Armada of 1588 was Philip II's attempt to invade England and restore Catholicism. However, English ships were faster and better armed than Spanish galleons. Key battles at Plymouth, the Isle of Wight, and Gravelines saw English forces outgun and outmanoeuvre the Spanish fleet.
Key Point: The Armada's defeat came from superior English ship design, weather conditions that scattered Spanish ships, and supply problems that left Spanish forces weakened after 10 weeks at sea.
The victory transformed England's reputation. Elizabeth's authority strengthened, the English navy became a major European force, and Protestantism gained confidence across Europe. For Spain, it marked the beginning of imperial decline and massive financial losses that would take decades to recover from.
