brest litovsk treaty (when russia backed out of the war in 1917) lost lots of land, people, money

evidence of germany doing worse in treaties

fair, no more war, democracy, 14 points (freedom of the seas, self determination, league on nations) 

trade, protect empire+navy, harsh but not too much - had to pretend in public that he wanted a harsh treaty 

prevent another attack on france, revenge, very harsh , remembers 1871

C says W is too fair, C feels LG is too fair on europe and is frustrated by the fact LG cares about the empire and the navy, W’s 14 worry LG due to freedom of the seas + self determination (many people from different ethnicities lived together in different countries and he didn’t want to just split people)

loss of land : alsace lorraine (france), polish corridor (poland - cut germany in two), danzig (LoN), upper silesia (poland) saarland (LoN), all of their colonies eg cameroon

military restrictions: 100,000 army, no conscription, 6 battleships, no tanks, subs, planes, rhineland demilitarised 

happy, LoN, self determination (czecho slovakia + poland) BUT reparations too high, treaty too harsh, USA didnt join the LoN

happy, empire+navy gone BUT reparations too high, treaty too harsh - feared germany would want revenge 

happy, alsace lorraine, high reparations, war guilt, saarland coal BUT reparations still not enough, military not cut enough, abated rhineland gone from germany

don’t feel totally too blame, just an excuse to make them pay

was a militaristic country before so humiliated + job losses 

seen as the ‘winners club’, resented by germans 

unstable government, hatred of democracy, huge reparations bill

1920 attempted right wing revolution - kapp putsch                                                1923 - ruhr occupied, workers strike, hyperinflation, munich putsch 

other defeated powers, loss of land, military, money 

treaty of sevres but it is refused by turkey and they threaten big 3 , big 3 give in and make treaty of lausanne
