Cold War Origins (1939-1968)
You'll notice the Cold War didn't start immediately after World War II - it developed gradually as trust broke down between former allies. The Grand Alliance between Britain, USA, and Soviet Union began cracking at conferences like Yalta and Potsdam in 1945, where leaders couldn't agree on Europe's future.
The real tensions exploded in 1946-1947 with competing telegrams and speeches. Truman's Doctrine and the Marshall Plan showed America's commitment to stopping communist expansion, whilst Stalin responded with his own economic bloc, Comecon. Germany became the first major flashpoint - divided into zones, then separate countries by 1949.
The arms race intensified everything, with both sides developing increasingly powerful weapons. From atomic bombs in the 1940s to ICBMs in the 1950s, each breakthrough raised the stakes. Major crises like the Berlin Wall (1961) and Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) brought the world dangerously close to nuclear war.
Remember: The Berlin Wall and Cuban Missile Crisis are often the most heavily tested topics from this period - know the key dates and outcomes!
End of the Cold War (1968-1991)
The path to peace wasn't straightforward - tensions actually got worse before they got better! The Prague Spring showed the Soviet Union still wouldn't tolerate reform in its satellite states, whilst new conflicts like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan reignited hostilities in the late 1970s.
Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev transformed everything in the 1980s. Reagan's tough stance, including the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), pressured the Soviet economy. Meanwhile, Gorbachev introduced reforms that loosened Soviet control over Eastern Europe. Their summits from Geneva to Moscow gradually built trust and led to actual nuclear disarmament.
The end came quickly once it started. Hungary opening its border with Austria in May 1989 began the domino effect. The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, symbolising the end of a divided Europe. By 1991, the Soviet Union itself collapsed, officially ending the Cold War that had dominated international relations for nearly half a century.
Key insight: Gorbachev's reforms were meant to save communism but actually helped end it - sometimes the most important historical changes are unintended consequences!
