Medieval medicine from 1000-1400 might seem primitive, but it laid... Show more

Ever wondered why medieval doctors checked your wee? Medieval medicine was based on some pretty wild ideas, but they were genuinely trying to help people get better.
The four humours dominated medical thinking - yellow bile, black bile, phlegm, and blood all needed perfect balance or you'd fall ill. Doctors used urine charts and astrology alongside bloodletting and leeches to restore this balance. When all else failed, people turned to prayer and herbal remedies.
Hippocrates revolutionised medicine by insisting doctors should observe and record symptoms rather than just blame the gods. Galen built on this, emphasising the importance of checking patients' pulses and conducting animal dissections (the church supported his work, which helped a lot).
Islamic medicine was absolutely crucial for European progress. Merchants and Crusaders brought back advanced medical texts that English doctors desperately needed. Without these Islamic innovations, European medicine would've stayed stuck in the Dark Ages for much longer.
Quick Fact: Only about 470 hospital beds existed in the entire country - that's roughly one bed per 6,000 people!

The Black Death of 1348-49 was medieval Europe's worst nightmare - imagine losing a third of everyone you know in just two years.
People had no clue what caused this horror. They blamed God's punishment, astrology, dead animals, or standing water. The symptoms were absolutely terrifying: massive boils, vomiting, fever, bleeding under the skin, and agonising spasms that often meant certain death.
Desperate times called for desperate measures. Some communities burned Jewish people alive (a horrific scapegoating response), whilst others tried drinking urine twice daily or getting blessed by bishops. King Edward III ordered street cleaning, and bodies were burned quickly in mass graves to prevent further spread.
The economic impact was catastrophic. Fields went unploughed as farmers died, food rotted unharvested, and farm animals ran wild. Food prices skyrocketed, making survival even harder. However, surviving peasants suddenly found themselves in demand for work - a major social shift that would reshape English society.
Shocking Stat: Entire villages were completely wiped out, and survivors often faced starvation even after the plague passed.

Medieval medicine was a proper mixed bag - some brilliant innovations alongside some spectacularly wrong ideas that held progress back for centuries.
What actually helped: The church built hospitals and trained doctors in universities, whilst monasteries maintained surprisingly good hygiene standards. Wars gave surgeons plenty of practice and led to new surgical tools. Islamic scholars preserved ancient knowledge and emphasised education over superstition, whilst forward-thinking councils introduced laws to clean up towns.
What held everything back: The church's ban on human dissection meant doctors had rubbish anatomy knowledge. Universities taught outdated theories from ancient texts rather than encouraging new discoveries. Money got diverted to wars instead of public health, and sudden disease outbreaks were blamed on supernatural causes.
The obsession with the four humours was probably the biggest obstacle. This theory was so dominant that doctors rarely looked for alternative explanations, missing opportunities for genuine medical breakthroughs that could've saved countless lives.
Key Takeaway: Medieval medicine shows how religious authority and ancient theories can both preserve knowledge and prevent scientific progress - a lesson that's still relevant today.
