The American West Timeline (1830-1895)

Early Migration and Displacement (1830-1850) The story kicks off with the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which forced 46,000 American Indians to relocate west of the Mississippi River. This created the Permanent Indian Frontier in 1834, supposedly separating white and Native American lands forever. Meanwhile, economic troubles in the East pushed thousands of settlers to use the Oregon Trail (opened 1836) as their pathway to new opportunities.

The 1840s brought massive change through territorial expansion. After winning the Mexican-American War in 1848, America suddenly owned huge chunks of western land, including California. The discovery of gold in California that same year triggered the famous Gold Rush of 1849, bringing 100,000 fortune-seekers westward and boosting California's population to 300,000 by 1855.

Transportation Revolution and Conflict (1850-1870) The Homestead Act of 1862 offered 160-acre plots for just £10, making land ownership accessible to ordinary families. The completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 revolutionised western migration, making the journey faster, safer, and cheaper than ever before.

This period also saw escalating conflicts with Plains Indians. The Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and Red Cloud's War (1866-68) highlighted the growing tensions, leading to treaties like the second Fort Laramie Treaty that established reservations whilst trying to maintain peace.

The End of the Frontier (1870-1895) Cattle ranching boomed with the establishment of cowtowns like Abilene in 1867, creating the iconic cowboy culture. However, the harsh winter of 1886-87 TheGreatDieUpThe Great Die-Up ended the open range era. By 1890, all Plains Indians were settled on reservations, and the Wounded Knee Massacre tragically marked the end of Native American resistance. The frontier officially closed in 1890, ending this remarkable chapter of American history.

Key Point: The transformation of the American West happened incredibly quickly - in just 60 years, the entire landscape changed from Native American territory to settled farmland and growing cities.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
