Mimo intencji Krzywoustego, rozbicie dzielnicowe nie zapobiegło walkom o władzę. W 1146 roku młodsi bracia wygnali Władysława z kraju, a następnie toczyli między sobą kolejne konflikty. Z czasem zasada senioratu upadła, a rozbicie dzielnicowe pogłębiało się, prowadząc do powstania 17 księstw w 1288 roku.
