Mezopotamia - kolebka cywilizacji
Mezopotamia leżała w dorzeczu Eufratu i Tygrysa, na terenie nazywanym żyznym półksiężycem. Ta starożytna cywilizacja powstała już w IV tysiącleciu p.n.e. i dała początek rewolucji urbanistycznej - czyli powstawaniu pierwszych miast w historii ludzkości.
Klimat Mezopotamii był zróżnicowany. Południe miało bardzo żyzne ziemie, ale cierpiało z powodu gwałtownych wylewów rzek. Mieszkańcy poradzili sobie z tym problemem, budując systemy irygacyjne (kanały). Na północy padało więcej deszczów i było więcej lasów, ale mniej żyznej gleby.
Sumerowie, mieszkańcy południowej Mezopotamii, stworzyli pierwsze miasta-państwa, takie jak Ur, Uruk i Lagasz. Zorganizowali państwa jako teokracje, gdzie kapłani sprawowali władzę. Co ważne, wynaleźli też koło garncarskie, wóz i pismo klinowe zapisywane na glinianych tabliczkach!
Czy wiesz, że? Sumerowie byli świetnymi matematykami! Wymyślili system dziesiętny i sześćdziesiątny. Ten drugi używamy do dziś przy pomiarze czasu i kątów (360 stopni w okręgu).

Babilonia to potężne państwo, które wyrosło na fundamentach cywilizacji Sumeru i Akadu około 1894 r. p.n.e. Stało się prawdziwą potęgą dzięki mądrym rządom i podbojom militarnym, a jego stolica - Babilon - była ważnym centrum kulturalnym i gospodarczym.
Najwspanialszy rozkwit Babilonia przeżyła za panowania króla Hammurabiego , który zjednoczył prawie całą Mezopotamię. Hammurabi stworzył słynny kodeks praw, który regulował życie mieszkańców. Niestety, po jego śmierci państwo zaczęło słabnąć.
Babilońskie społeczeństwo dzieliło się na wolnych ludzi i niewolników. Chłopi musieli pracować przy budowie kanałów i służyć w wojsku. Ziemia należała głównie do króla i bogatych ludzi, a chłopi mogli ją tylko dzierżawić w zamian za daninę.
Ciekawostka: Za panowania króla Nabuchodonozora II powstały słynne wiszące ogrody Semiramidy, uważane za jeden z siedmiu cudów świata starożytnego!
Prawo, religia i osiągnięcia Mezopotamii
Kodeks Hammurabiego to jeden z najstarszych spisanych zbiorów praw na świecie. Został wyryty na kamiennym słupie wysokim na ponad 2,5 metra! Opierał się na zasadzie "oko za oko, ząb za ząb". Ważne jest to, że mieszkańcy nie byli równi wobec prawa - o karze decydowała pozycja społeczna.
Mieszkańcy Mezopotamii wierzyli w wielu bogów. W Babilonie najważniejszym bóstwem był Marduk, którego symbolem był wąż-smok. Najświętszymi budowlami były zigguraty - ogromne świątynie o 5-7 piętrach, na szczycie których znajdowała się kaplica z posągiem bóstwa. Kapłani zajmowali się też astronomią i układaniem horoskopów.
Mezopotamia dała światu wiele wynalazków i odkryć. Mieszkańcy wymyślili koło do transportu, wozy, zegar słoneczny i koło garncarskie. Podzielili rok na tygodnie, a dobę na 24 godziny. Potrafili potęgować i pierwiastkować, a także rozróżniać gwiazdy i planety. Fenicjanie, lud zamieszkujący wybrzeże Morza Śródziemnego, stworzyli prosty alfabet z 22 znaków i byli świetnymi żeglarzami.
Super fakt: W Mezopotamii powstała pierwsza wielka biblioteka w historii! Znajdowała się w mieście Niniwa i gromadziła tysiące tabliczek zapisanych pismem klinowym.
