Life Stages and Development Areas
Ever wondered why toddlers behave so differently from teenagers, or why your grandparents see the world differently than you do? Human development follows a clear pattern of six distinct life stages, each with its own characteristics and challenges.
The journey starts with infancy (0-2 years), moves through early childhood (3-8 years) and adolescence (9-18 years) - that's where you are now! After that comes early adulthood (19-45 years), middle adulthood (46-65 years), and finally later adulthood (65+ years).
What makes this really interesting is that development doesn't just happen randomly. It occurs across four interconnected areas that you can remember with the acronym PIES: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Social development. Physical development covers obvious changes like height and weight, whilst intellectual development involves your thinking, memory, and language skills getting sharper.
Emotional development is all about understanding your feelings and building self-esteem, while social development focuses on forming relationships and learning how to interact with others. The brilliant thing is that these four areas don't work separately - they're constantly influencing each other throughout every stage of your life.
Quick Tip: When analysing any life stage, always consider how all four PIES areas connect and influence each other - this approach will help you understand the complete picture of human development.
