Development of Self-Concept in Early Years
Your self-esteem journey actually starts way before you can even remember it. Children with high self-esteem find relationships easier, resist peer pressure better, and handle conflict more successfully - skills that'll serve you well through school and beyond.
From birth to 18 months, babies build their first sense of worth through attachment with primary caregivers. When parents consistently meet basic needs like comfort and love, babies gradually realise they're valued and safe. This early foundation is absolutely crucial for everything that follows.
Between 18 months and 2 years, toddlers start developing a clearer picture of themselves. Every new skill they master - from walking to talking - helps them understand their capabilities and place in the world. Children who feel genuinely loved and treated as special by their caregivers develop stronger self-worth, whilst those who feel unloved struggle to value themselves.
