The Nervous System: Your Body's Command Centre

Think of your nervous system as having two main parts that work together like a perfectly coordinated team. The central nervous system (CNS) is your body's headquarters, made up of your brain and spinal cord, where all the major decisions get made.

The peripheral nervous system acts like a massive network of cables connecting your CNS to everywhere else in your body. It's composed of cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and peripheral nerves that stretch from your spinal cord to your organs, limbs, and skin. Sensory nerves carry information towards the CNS, whilst motor nerves carry commands away from it.

Your autonomic nervous system has two opposing forces that keep you balanced. The sympathetic nervous system kicks in during stress, speeding up your heart rate and preparing you for 'fight or flight' situations - it's boosted by adrenaline when you're scared or excited. Meanwhile, the parasympathetic nervous system does the opposite, slowing your heart rate and helping you relax and conserve energy.

Quick Tip: Remember it as "sympathetic = speed up, parasympathetic = slow down" - the sympathetic system gets you ready for action!

Neurons are the specialised cells that make all this communication possible. Each neuron has a cell body containing genetic information, dendrites that receive messages from other neurons, and axons that carry nerve impulses away. The myelin sheath wraps around axons like insulation on electrical wires, whilst axon terminals store neurotransmitters for passing messages between neurons.
