Weather vs Climate and Formation of Storms

Weather is what you see when you look outside right now - sunny, rainy, windy, or snowy conditions that change from day to day. Climate, however, is the big picture: it's the average weather patterns a location experiences over 30 years or more.

Several key factors shape both weather and climate. Latitude (distance from the equator) matters because the sun's rays spread out more at higher latitudes, making places cooler. Distance from the sea affects temperature too - water heats and cools more slowly than land, so coastal areas stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Altitude makes a huge difference as well - temperatures drop by about 1°C for every 100 metres you climb. Wind direction also plays a role, depending on whether air masses blow over warm seas or cold land.

Tropical storms are nature's most powerful weather systems, forming between 5° and 30° latitude over warm oceans. When ocean temperatures reach at least 27°C, warm air rises rapidly, creating very low pressure. This draws up more moist air, forming spiraling winds and massive cumulonimbus clouds that create the storm's eye wall. The centre, called the eye of the storm, remains surprisingly calm and dry as cold air sinks down.
