Urban Challenges in NEE Cities

Traffic congestion has become a nightmare in many NEE cities, with the number of cars increasing by 40% in just one decade in some areas. This creates a domino effect - more cars mean longer commute times, which reduces economic productivity as people spend hours stuck in traffic instead of working.

The environmental impact is equally serious. Increased CO2 emissions from all those idling vehicles contribute to air pollution, while noise pollution becomes so bad it actually pushes residents to move away from city centres. Cities often struggle to balance tourist income (over 2 million international visitors annually in major NEE cities) with locals' needs.

Housing inequality creates stark divisions within cities. In some areas, 22% of the population lives in favelas (informal settlements), where unemployment rates exceed 20%. These communities often lack basic services - 12% have no access to clean water, forcing millions to build makeshift housing without proper planning.

Key Fact: In favelas, infant mortality rates can reach 50 per 1000 births, compared to just 18 per 1000 in developed areas like Chelmsford.

The informal sector becomes many people's only option for work, but wages are shockingly low - often less than £60 per month. When 30% of residents can't afford rising costs for healthcare and groceries, the cycle of poverty becomes nearly impossible to break. High population density means diseases spread quickly, leading to increased hospital admissions and strain on already limited healthcare systems.
