Exploring Tropical Rainforests: Study Guide

Tropical Rainforest Ecosystems
Ever wondered what makes rainforests so special? These amazing ecosystems have a constant climate that stays hot and wet (2000mm of rain yearly) all year round. Because the sun stays directly overhead near the equator, there are no proper seasons - just endless summer!
The vegetation is absolutely mind-blowing. Trees grow incredibly tall and stay green all year (evergreen), creating such a thick canopy that barely any sunlight reaches the forest floor. You'll also find epiphytes - clever plants like orchids that live on other trees and get their nutrients straight from the air.
Despite all this lush greenery, the soil is actually quite poor. The heavy daily rainfall washes away most nutrients, leaving only a thin layer of fertile soil from rotting leaves. This might seem odd, but the forest has adapted perfectly to these conditions.
Did You Know? Indigenous people have lived in rainforests for thousands of years, surviving by hunting, fishing, and growing small vegetable gardens - proving humans can live sustainably in these environments.
The animal life is extraordinary. From gorillas and jaguars to tiny tree frogs and millions of insect species, rainforests contain more animal varieties than any other ecosystem on Earth.
Rainforest Biodiversity Under Threat
Here's the jaw-dropping fact: rainforests contain around 50% of all plant, animal and insect species on Earth, despite covering less than 6% of the planet's surface. This incredible biodiversity exists because the stable, warm, wet conditions mean plants and animals never have to worry about surviving harsh winters or droughts.
Many species have become so specialised that they depend on just one or two other species to survive. This makes them incredibly vulnerable - if their specific food source or habitat disappears, they can't adapt quickly enough.
Unfortunately, deforestation and development are destroying these precious ecosystems at an alarming rate. In Brazil alone, the number of threatened species nearly doubled from 628 in 2008 to 1182 in 2014. When we lose rainforest, we're not just losing trees - we're potentially losing thousands of species that haven't even been discovered yet.
Reality Check: Scientists estimate we lose 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest destruction - that's roughly one species every 10 minutes.
