Understanding Development and Global Inequalities
Development means improving living standards through better resource use, and it happens on three levels. Economic development focuses on industrial growth and technology use. Social development improves people's daily lives through things like clean water and electricity. Environmental development protects and manages our natural world sustainably.
Countries measure their progress using various indicators. Economic indicators include GDP per capita (total value of goods and services per person) and employment types across different industries. Social indicators cover infant mortality rates, literacy rates, and life expectancy. The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, education, and income into one useful number.
The world's countries fall into three main categories. Low Income Countries (LICs) are the poorest with low living standards. Newly Emerging Economies (NEEs) are getting richer as they shift from farming to manufacturing, leading to better wages. High Income Countries (HICs) are wealthy nations that can invest heavily in services for their citizens.

Causes and Consequences of Uneven Development
Several physical factors create uneven development across the globe. Natural resources like oil and minerals provide fuel for growth, whilst reliable rainfall benefits farming. However, extreme climates can limit industry and affect health, though they might attract tourists. Natural hazards can devastate progress, and landlocked or mountainous countries face unique trade and farming challenges.
Human factors play equally important roles in development patterns. Education creates skilled workforces who earn more and pay higher taxes. Good governance and political stability encourage trade and investment, whilst corruption holds countries back. Countries with trade surpluses (exporting more than importing) can reinvest in their economies. Healthcare systems matter too - sick populations can't contribute effectively to economic growth.
Historical factors still shape today's world. Colonialism helped Europe develop but slowed progress in many colonised regions. Countries that industrialised early have had more time to advance further, creating lasting advantages.
These inequalities create serious consequences. Wealth gaps mean people in HICs earn far more than those in LICs. Better healthcare in developed countries leads to longer life expectancies. Migration occurs when people seek opportunities in more developed neighbouring countries, looking for better standards of living and security.
Key Point: Development gaps aren't just between countries - they exist within countries too, creating regional inequalities that governments must address.
