Earth's Layers and Structure

Think of Earth like a giant layered cake - each layer has different properties that affect what happens on the surface. At the very centre sits the core, which has two parts: an inner metallic core and an outer core that's the hottest part of our entire planet.

Surrounding the core is the mantle, made up of semi-molten rocks that can flow like thick treacle when heated. This layer is absolutely crucial because it drives all the action happening above.

The crust is where we live - it's surprisingly thin at just 5-100 km thick, basically floating on top of the mantle like pieces of broken eggshell. These broken pieces are called tectonic plates, and they're constantly being dragged around by the molten rock beneath them.

Quick Tip: Remember that molten rock rises when heated, and this movement drags the tectonic plates along for the ride!

Plate Types and Movements

Not all tectonic plates are created equal! Continental plates are like sturdy old ships - they're thicker, older, and lighter, so they don't sink. Oceanic plates are the opposite: thinner, younger, and denser, which means they get pushed down (or subduct) when they meet continental plates.

Convection currents in the upper mantle are the driving force behind everything. Hot rocks rise and slam into the underside of plates, creating three main types of plate margins where plates meet.

At destructive margins, oceanic plates slide beneath continental ones, building pressure until the stress causes earthquakes. Constructive margins see plates pulling apart, letting magma rise and harden into new ridges. Conservative margins have plates sliding past each other, creating friction that eventually snaps into earthquakes.

Hotspots are special areas where volcanic activity occurs over particularly hot parts of the mantle. Rising hot material weakens the crust until it bubbles through to the surface, creating volcanoes in unexpected places.

Remember: Each type of plate movement creates different hazards - destructive margins often cause the most powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions!
