Understanding Plate Tectonics for KS3

Earth's Structure and Plate Tectonics
Think of Earth like a massive onion with different layers, each with its own job. The inner core sits right at the centre, reaching scorching temperatures of 1600°C - that's hot enough to melt copper! Around it, the outer core contains liquid iron that's constantly moving about.
The mantle is the thick, meaty layer that makes up 84% of Earth's volume. It's filled with magma - semi-molten rock that acts like a slow-moving, super-hot soup. On top of all this sits the crust, the thin outer shell where we live.
Here's the brilliant bit: Earth's crust isn't one solid piece. It's cracked into massive chunks called tectonic plates, just like a cracked eggshell. These plates are constantly moving because the hot magma underneath keeps pushing and pulling them around.
Quick Fact: If Earth were the size of an egg, the crust would be as thin as the eggshell - that's how incredibly thin the layer we live on really is!
