Geography and Key Facts About Africa
Ever wondered what makes Africa such a fascinating continent? It's absolutely massive - the second-largest continent on Earth with 54 countries (some say 56, depending on political recognition). The continent stretches across six different time zones, so when you're having breakfast, someone on the other side could be eating dinner!
Africa's geography is pretty epic too. You've got the Sahara Desert - the world's largest hot desert - covering the north, whilst the Kalahari Desert sits in the south. The continent is surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, plus the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Mount Kilimanjaro towers at 5,895 metres, making it Africa's highest peak.
The equator runs right through the middle of Africa, with the Tropic of Capricorn crossing the southern part. This positioning gives Africa its diverse climates and ecosystems. Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, provides water and livelihood for millions of people across East Africa.
Quick Fact: Cape Agulhas in South Africa marks the continent's most southern tip - not the Cape of Good Hope as many people think!
Natural Resources and Economic Reality
Africa is basically sitting on a goldmine - literally! The continent is loaded with natural resources including gold, diamonds, crude oil, petroleum, uranium, and iron. Countries like South Africa are famous for gold mining, Egypt exports crude oil and petroleum products, whilst Botswana leads the world in diamond production.
Here's the tricky bit though - having loads of natural resources doesn't automatically make countries wealthy. Many African nations remain quite poor despite their resource wealth. Over 400 million people live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $1.90 per day. This happens because of factors like drought, conflict, and poor infrastructure that prevent the wealth from reaching ordinary people.
Sub-Saharan Africa relies heavily on exporting natural resources, which account for 75% of their exports. The challenge African countries face today is making sure this resource wealth actually improves people's lives rather than just benefiting a few.
Africa's diversity extends beyond resources too. Swahili is the most widely spoken African language with 100 million speakers, though English and French serve as official languages in many countries due to colonial history. Christianity and Islam are the two main religions practiced across the continent.
Remember: Africa's economic growth is happening fast in some areas, but the benefits aren't reaching everyone equally yet.
