Natural Hazards and Earth's Structure
Ever wondered why some countries experience devastating earthquakes whilst others never do? It all comes down to plate tectonics - the movement of massive rock slabs that make up Earth's surface.
Our planet has three main layers: the crust (thin outer shell), mantle (hot, flowing rock), and core . The crust comes in two types - oceanic crust (dense and thin under oceans) and continental crust (thicker, made of lighter rocks).
Plate boundaries are where the action happens. Destructive plates collide head-on, constructive plates pull apart, and conservative plates slide past each other. Each type creates different hazards - earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.
Key insight: The epicentre is the surface point directly above an earthquake's focus (where it actually starts underground). Scientists use the Richter scale to measure earthquake magnitude.
Earthquakes: Comparing Rich and Poor Countries
When earthquakes strike, the country's wealth dramatically affects the outcome. High Income Countries (HICs) like Japan have strict building codes and emergency planning, whilst Low Income Countries (LICs) like Nepal often suffer far worse consequences.
Japan's 2011 earthquake was magnitude 9.0 - the most powerful in their history. Despite costing $235 billion, their prediction systems and protection measures kept deaths relatively low at around 100 people initially (though the tsunami caused by this earthquake killed 15,900).
Nepal's 2015 earthquake was smaller at magnitude 7.8, but killed 9,000 people and affected 8 million. The shallow depth (just 15km underground) made the shaking incredibly destructive to buildings not designed to withstand such forces.
Remember: Primary effects happen immediately (deaths, building collapse), whilst secondary effects follow later (homelessness, economic problems, disease outbreaks).
Rivers and Coastal Processes
Rivers are like nature's sculptors, constantly reshaping the landscape through erosion, transportation, and deposition. The long profile shows how a river changes from steep mountains to flat plains as it flows from source to mouth.
Meanders form brilliant examples of river power in action. Water flows faster on the outside of bends, causing abrasion and hydraulic action that erode the bank. Eventually, the river might cut through the meander's neck during floods, creating an oxbow lake - a curved, isolated pool.
Coastlines face constant attack from waves. Destructive waves (weak swash, strong backwash) erode cliffs and beaches, whilst constructive waves (strong swash, weak backwash) build them up. Hard engineering like sea walls fights the sea directly, but soft engineering like beach nourishment works with natural processes.
Top tip: Swash pushes water up beaches, backwash drags it back down - remember this for understanding how waves shape coastlines!
