Hydraulic Action
Ever watched a powerful wave crash against rocks? Hydraulic action works similarly in rivers, where the sheer force of flowing water smashes directly against riverbanks and the river bed.
The process becomes even more destructive when air gets trapped in tiny cracks within the rocks. As the water pressure builds up, it forces the air deeper into these cracks, eventually causing the rock to split and break apart.

Abrasion
Imagine using sandpaper to smooth down a piece of wood - abrasion works exactly like this in rivers! Pebbles, stones, and other rocky material get picked up by the flowing water and grind along the riverbanks and river bed.
This constant scraping and grinding action slowly wears away the sides and bottom of the river channel. The faster the river flows, the more effective this sandpapering effect becomes.
Remember: Abrasion needs the river to be carrying rocky material - no pebbles means no grinding action!
You can often see the results of abrasion in smooth, worn riverbank surfaces where the rock has been gradually scraped away over many years.

Attrition
Attrition is like putting rocks in a giant washing machine! As rivers transport stones, pebbles, and boulders downstream, these rocky materials constantly knock and crash into each other.
Each collision chips away small pieces, gradually making the rocks smaller and more rounded. This explains why pebbles near a river's mouth are typically much smoother and smaller than the jagged rocks found upstream.
Fun Fact: The longer rocks travel downstream, the rounder and smaller they become through attrition!
This process also helps explain why river beaches often have lovely smooth, rounded stones rather than sharp, angular rocks.

Solution
Some rocks are much easier to erode than others, and solution targets the most vulnerable ones. This process occurs when river water chemically dissolves certain types of rock, particularly limestone and chalk.
Unlike the other three types of erosion, solution doesn't involve any physical force or grinding. Instead, slightly acidic river water slowly dissolves the rock, carrying away the dissolved minerals.
Key Point: Solution works best on sedimentary rocks like limestone - you won't see granite dissolving anytime soon!
