Formation of Headlands and Bays

The secret behind these stunning coastal features lies in the type of rock beneath your feet. Headlands and bays form along coastlines where hard rock and soft rock sit side by side in alternating bands.

Here's where it gets interesting - the sea doesn't treat all rocks equally. Soft rock erodes much faster than hard rock, a process geographers call differential erosion. Think of it like the sea being a picky eater, gobbling up the softer rocks whilst leaving the tougher ones alone.

Over time, this selective erosion creates a distinctive pattern. The areas of soft rock get carved away to form crescent-shaped bays, often with lovely beaches nestled inside them. Meanwhile, the resistant hard rock stubbornly stands firm, creating the headlands that jut out into the sea.

The erosion happens through two main processes: abrasion (where waves hurl rocks and pebbles at the coast like nature's own sandblasting) and hydraulic action (where water gets forced into cracks, compressing air that then expands and splits the rock apart). Both processes work faster on softer rocks, explaining why bays develop where they do.
