Tropical Rainforest Adaptations and Global Ecosystems
Plant adaptations in tropical rainforests are absolutely brilliant! Trees have developed waxy leaves with pointed tips that act like natural gutters, letting heavy rainfall slide right off. Their flexible leaf stems can actually move to follow the sun throughout the day, maximising photosynthesis like natural solar panels.
Buttress roots are those massive, ridge-like supports you see at the base of giant trees. They're not just for show - they help transfer water efficiently and increase surface area for gas exchange. Think of them as the tree's ultimate support system and breathing apparatus rolled into one.
Animals have evolved equally clever survival tricks. Camouflage works both ways - prey animals blend in to avoid being eaten, whilst predators use it to ambush their next meal. Some species like poison dart frogs take the opposite approach, using bright warning colours to advertise their toxicity.
