What are earthquakes?

An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground. It's caused by
movements within the Earth

What Are Earthquakes?

Think of the Earth's surface like a giant jigsaw puzzle made of slowly moving pieces called tectonic plates. When these massive rock slabs get stuck and suddenly slip, they release incredible amounts of energy that shake the ground violently.

The key to understanding earthquakes lies in knowing some essential terms. The focus (or hypocentre) is where the earthquake actually starts deep underground, whilst the epicentre is the spot directly above it on the surface - this is usually where the worst damage happens.

Seismic waves are the energy waves that travel outward from the focus, causing the shaking we feel. Scientists detect these waves using a seismograph and measure earthquake strength using the Richter Scale, which goes from 1 to 10.

Quick Tip: Remember that the epicentre is on the surface, whilst the focus is underground - this difference often comes up in exams!

How Earthquakes Actually Happen

Picture two massive puzzle pieces trying to slide past each other but getting stuck due to friction. That's exactly what happens with tectonic plates at plate boundaries. The plates keep pushing, building up enormous pressure over years or even decades.

Eventually, something's got to give. When the pressure becomes too much, the rock suddenly breaks or slips along a fault line. All that stored-up energy explodes outward as seismic waves, racing through the Earth in all directions.

When these waves reach the surface, they cause the ground to shake, rattle, and roll. The closer you are to the epicentre, the stronger the shaking feels - which is why damage is usually worst directly above the focus.

Remember: Ireland is pretty safe from major earthquakes because we're right in the middle of a tectonic plate, far from the dangerous edges!

Measuring Earthquake Power

The Richter Scale might seem confusing at first, but it's actually quite clever. Each whole number jump means the ground shakes 10 times harder - so a magnitude 6 earthquake is 10 times more powerful than a magnitude 5!

Here's what different magnitudes mean in real life: anything below 4.0 is barely noticeable, 5.0-5.9 can damage poorly built structures, 6.0-6.9 causes serious destruction, and anything above 8.0 is absolutely catastrophic.

The scale is logarithmic, which is just a fancy way of saying the jumps get bigger and bigger. A magnitude 7 isn't just twice as strong as a magnitude 6 - it's actually 10 times stronger, with about 32 times more energy released.

Exam Alert: Questions about the difference between focus and epicentre, plus how the Richter Scale works, are almost guaranteed to appear on your test!

The Immediate Aftermath

Earthquakes cause two main types of damage that you need to understand. Primary effects happen straight away - buildings collapse, roads crack, power lines snap, and people get injured by falling debris.

Secondary effects are often even more dangerous and happen afterwards. Underwater earthquakes can trigger massive tsunamis that devastate coastlines. The shaking can cause landslides on steep slopes, whilst broken gas pipes and electrical wires frequently start fires.

Disease outbreaks are another nasty secondary effect. When water pipes break and mix with sewage, deadly illnesses like cholera can spread rapidly through displaced populations living in temporary shelters.

Real-World Connection: The 2011 Japan earthquake's tsunami was actually more deadly than the initial ground shaking - showing why secondary effects matter so much.

Tale of Two Earthquakes

Comparing the 2010 Haiti earthquake (magnitude 7.0) with the 2011 Japan earthquake (magnitude 9.0) shows why a country's wealth and preparation matter more than raw power sometimes.

Haiti lost over 220,000 lives because buildings were poorly constructed and "pancaked" when they collapsed. The country lacked proper emergency services, and even getting aid into the damaged port was nearly impossible.

Japan's earthquake was much stronger, but their strict building codes meant fewer structures collapsed. Most of the 16,000 deaths came from the tsunami, not the shaking itself. However, the disaster did cause the Fukushima nuclear plant to fail - a major secondary disaster.

This comparison perfectly illustrates how MEDCs (developed countries) can better survive earthquakes than LEDCs (less developed countries), even when facing stronger tremors.

Key Insight: It's not just about how strong the earthquake is - factors like building quality, population density, time of day, and a country's resources all affect the final death toll.

What Really Matters for Your Exam

Several factors determine how destructive an earthquake becomes. Shallow focus earthquakes cause more surface damage than deep ones. Higher population density means more potential casualties, whilst the time of day matters too - night-time quakes catch people sleeping and unprepared.

The level of development is crucial. MEDCs have better building codes, emergency services, and money for reconstruction. LEDCs often suffer disproportionately high casualties from relatively smaller earthquakes.

For quick revision, remember this sequence: tectonic plates move and get stuck at fault lines, pressure builds up, sudden release creates seismic waves from the focus, strongest shaking occurs at the epicentre, leading to primary and secondary effects.

Ireland Connection: We're lucky to live in the middle of the Eurasian Plate, far from dangerous plate boundaries - which is why we don't experience major earthquakes here!
