Understanding Development and Global Variations
Development means improving living standards through better use of resources. It's not just about money - it covers economic progress through industrialisation, social improvements like clean water access, and environmental protection efforts.
Countries measure development using various indicators. Economic indicators include GDP per capita (total value of goods and services per person) and employment types across different industries. Social indicators focus on people's wellbeing - things like infant mortality rates, literacy levels, and life expectancy.
Rostow's model shows five stages of economic development that countries typically follow. It starts with traditional farming societies, moves through industrialisation phases, and ends with high-consumption economies. Think of it as a roadmap from poverty to prosperity.
Global development is seriously uneven. LIDCs (poorest countries) mostly cluster in Africa, EDCs (emerging economies) dominate Asia and South America, whilst ACs (wealthiest nations) concentrate in Europe and North America. This creates massive gaps in wealth, health, and education opportunities.
Key Point: Development isn't just about money - it's measured through economic, social, and environmental factors that all affect people's quality of life.
Breaking Free from Poverty - Ethiopia Case Study
Some countries face serious barriers to development that keep them trapped in poverty. Huge national debts with high interest rates make it impossible to invest in infrastructure. Political unrest and corruption prevent proper investment in essential services like healthcare and education.
Countries can escape poverty through different strategies. Top-down approaches involve large-scale government projects funded by borrowed money, whilst bottom-up strategies focus on small, community-led initiatives. Short-term aid helps during emergencies, but long-term support builds lasting improvements.
Ethiopia perfectly demonstrates these challenges and opportunities. Located in eastern Africa, it's landlocked and has low development indicators - GNI per capita of just $505 and life expectancy of 63 years. According to Rostow's model, Ethiopia sits at stage 2, preparing for economic take-off.
The country is attracting investment from TNCs like Siemens (telecommunications) and H&M (textiles manufacturing). Combined with aid programmes like Oxfam's 'Goat Aid' and over $550 million in annual international support, Ethiopia is gradually building the foundations for development. Major infrastructure projects like the Omo Hydroelectric dams show how top-down strategies can complement grassroots efforts.
Success Story: Ethiopia proves that with the right mix of investment, aid, and political vision, even LIDCs can start their journey towards prosperity.
