Urbanisation and City Development Patterns

Cities grow through two main processes: natural increase (more births than deaths) and rural-urban migration (people moving from countryside to cities). This creates a predictable cycle starting with basic urbanisation, then suburbanisation as people spread outward, followed by urban sprawl consuming farmland, and finally counter-urbanisation where people move back to smaller settlements.

Deindustrialisation has dramatically changed UK cities since the 1970s. Manufacturing jobs disappeared due to mechanisation and foreign competition, leaving many inner-city areas economically devastated. However, urban regeneration and gentrification have transformed many of these areas, though this can displace existing communities.

Global cities like London have become crucial nodes in the worldwide economy, housing international finance centres and corporate headquarters. These megacities (over 10 million people) face unique challenges managing such massive populations whilst maintaining economic competitiveness.
