Wave Types and Coastal Processes

Constructive waves are your beach-building heroes with strong swash (water rushing up the beach) and weak backwash (water flowing back). They deposit sediment and build up coastlines. Destructive waves work the opposite way - weak swash but powerful backwash that erodes beaches and cliffs.

Waves transport sediment in four clever ways. Solution dissolves minerals from rocks, whilst suspension carries small particles in the water. Saltation makes pebbles bounce along the seabed like underwater hopscotch, and traction rolls the heaviest boulders across the bottom.

Wave-cut notches form when waves repeatedly smash into cliff bases through abrasion and hydraulic action. This creates an indent that grows larger until the cliff becomes unstable and collapses. What's left behind is a wave-cut platform - a flat area of rock exposed at low tide that proves the cliff once extended much further out to sea.

Quick Tip: Remember constructive waves = Create beaches, destructive waves = Destroy them!

Erosion and Coastal Landforms

Coastal erosion happens through four main processes that work like nature's demolition crew. Abrasion hurls rocks against cliffs, hydraulic action forces water into cracks, attrition smashes rocks together until they shrink, and solution uses acidic seawater to dissolve alkaline rocks.

These processes create spectacular erosional landforms in a predictable sequence. Cracks in headlands become caves, which break through to form arches. When arches collapse, they leave behind isolated stacks, which eventually erode into small stumps.

Depositional landforms form where waves lose energy and drop sediment. Beaches result from the constant tug-of-war between constructive and destructive waves. Spits extend into the sea through longshore drift, often hooking around due to secondary winds and changing wave directions.

Sand dunes develop in stages too. Embryo dunes start when wind traps sand around debris, growing into yellow dunes with marram grass, then grey dunes with diverse plant life, and finally dune slacks that fill with water.

Remember: Erosional landforms = hard rock areas, depositional landforms = where waves lose energy!

Coastal Management: Swanage Case Study

The Dorset coast showcases classic coastal landforms perfectly. Old Harry and His Wife demonstrate erosional processes as limestone stacks and stumps, whilst Swanage Bay offers a lovely depositional beach that attracts tourists. Durlston Head's arch shows how resistant limestone creates dramatic coastal features.

Coastal management uses hard engineering and soft engineering strategies. Sea walls reflect wave energy but cost loads to maintain. Groynes stop longshore drift by trapping sediment, creating wider beaches. These approaches protect property but can look unsightly and damage marine habitats.

Beach nourishment represents soft engineering - adding sand to absorb wave energy naturally. This approach works with coastal processes rather than against them, maintaining the area's natural appearance whilst protecting the shoreline.

Swanage's coastal management brings clear advantages: protecting people, property, and historic sites whilst maintaining beaches for tourism and wildlife. However, the massive costs, habitat disruption, and visual impact on this beautiful coastline create ongoing challenges for local planners.
