Climate Change: Causes, Evidence, and Solutions
Ever wonder why summers seem hotter and weather patterns more unpredictable? Climate change has both natural and human causes that are reshaping our planet right now.
Natural causes work on massive timescales that dwarf human history. Eccentricity changes Earth's orbit from circular to oval every 100,000 years, whilst axial tilt shifts between 21.5° and 24.5° every 41,000 years. Precession makes our planet wobble like a spinning top over 26,000 years, and solar activity creates sunspot cycles every 11 years that affect how much heat we receive.
The natural greenhouse effect actually keeps Earth habitable by trapping heat that would otherwise escape to space. Greenhouse gases let sunlight through but trap the longer heat waves trying to radiate back out - like a planetary blanket that's gotten too thick.
Human activities now dominate climate change, with carbon dioxide causing 60% of net warming. Transport, farming, and burning fossil fuels pump out CO₂, whilst deforestation removes the trees that absorb it. Methane emissions from livestock, rice farming, and landfills add another powerful greenhouse gas to the mix.
Key Insight: Human causes now overwhelm natural climate cycles, making urgent action necessary.
Evidence surrounds us: rising sea levels from melting glaciers and expanding warm water threaten places like the Maldives and Bangladesh. Seasonal changes mean birds migrate earlier and flowers bloom sooner than in the 1970s. Some glaciers may completely disappear by 2035.
The global impacts include desertification, stronger storms, extreme weather, changing ecosystems, coastal flooding, heat-related diseases, and reduced crop yields. However, we can adapt through drought-resistant crops, new irrigation, sea walls, raised houses, and restored coastal forests.
Management solutions offer hope: alternative energy like solar and wind power, planting trees as carbon sinks, carbon capture technology, and international agreements between governments. Your generation will play a crucial role in implementing these solutions.
