Typhoon Haiyan: A Catastrophic Natural Disaster

Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in 2013 as a Category 5 storm with absolutely massive 170 mph winds - making it one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded. The sheer power of this storm shows just how destructive natural hazards can be when they reach extreme levels.

The primary impacts were devastating and immediate. Over 6,300 people lost their lives, with most deaths caused by the enormous storm surge that destroyed 90% of Tacloban city. Around 600,000 people were forced to flee their homes, whilst 40,000 houses were completely destroyed by the powerful winds and flooding.

The secondary impacts affected millions more people in the following weeks and months. About 14 million people were affected overall, with 6 million losing their jobs - making recovery much harder. Power lines were destroyed, leaving many without electricity, and flooding led to serious problems with clean water supplies and increased disease.

Quick Fact: Storm surges are often the deadliest part of typhoons, as walls of seawater can reach several metres high and travel far inland.

Short-term responses focused on saving lives and providing immediate help. International aid arrived quickly, with NGOs (non-governmental organisations) setting up field hospitals and over 1,200 evacuation centres. The USA sent helicopters for search and rescue operations, whilst emergency food supplies were distributed to survivors.

Long-term responses aimed to rebuild communities properly and reduce future risks. Safe zones were created away from flood-prone areas, and vital roads were repaired using money from the United Nations. Important jobs like fishing and rice farming were restored so people could earn a living again, whilst medical assistance continued for months after the disaster.
