Gradnetz und Zeitzonen der Erde
Das Gradnetz der Erde ist ein gedachtes Liniennetz, das über die Erdkugel gezogen wird. Es besteht aus sich senkrecht schneidenden Breiten- und Längenkreisen und dient der Bestimmung der geographischen Lage sowie der Orientierung auf der Erde.
Breitengrade
Die Breitengrade verlaufen parallel zum Äquator, der die Erde in die Nord- und Südhalbkugel teilt. Es gibt insgesamt 180 Breitenkreise, je 90 in Richtung Nord- und Südpol. Der Abstand zwischen zwei Breitenkreisen beträgt immer 111 km.
Highlight: Der Äquator ist mit einem Umfang von rund 40.000 km der längste Breitenkreis und wird auch "Großkreis" genannt.
Vocabulary: Breitengrade werden vom Äquator aus gezählt: 0° bis 90° N (nördliche Breite) und 0° bis 90° S (südliche Breite).
Längengrade
Die Längenkreise verlaufen senkrecht zu den Breitenkreisen und kreuzen sich alle im Nord- und Südpol. Es gibt insgesamt 180 Längenkreise, die vom Nullmeridian (0°) aus gezählt werden.
Definition: Ein Meridian ist ein halber Längenkreis, der von Pol zu Pol verläuft.
Example: Der Nullmeridian verläuft durch die alte Sternwarte von Greenwich bei London, England.
Vom Nullmeridian aus zählt man 180° nach Osten und 180° nach Westen. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite der Erdkugel, bei 180° O/W, befindet sich die Datumsgrenze.
Highlight: Alle Meridiane sind rund 20.000 km lang und werden auch "Mittagslinien" genannt, da alle Orte auf demselben Meridian zur gleichen Zeit Mittag haben.
Zeitzonen der Erde
Die Einführung von Zeitzonen wurde durch die Globalisierung des Nachrichtenverkehrs und die Zunahme des internationalen Verkehrs notwendig. 1884 einigten sich Vertreter von 25 Staaten auf der Internationalen Meridian-Konferenz in Washington darauf, die Erde in 24 Zeitzonen aufzuteilen.
Vocabulary: Jede Zeitzone umfasst 15 Längengrade, was einer Stunde Zeitunterschied entspricht.
Highlight: Der Greenwich-Meridian wurde zum Nullmeridian erklärt und bildet die Basis für die Null-Zeitzone, die sich von 7,5 Grad westlich bis 7,5 Grad östlich des Greenwich-Meridians erstreckt.
