Understanding Contra-indications in Eyebrow Shaping

Contra-indications are pre-existing medical conditions that could put you or your client at risk during treatment. Think of them as red flags that help you decide whether it's safe to proceed with eyebrow shaping.

These conditions might prevent treatment entirely or require you to modify your approach. Common examples include pregnancy, broken bones, varicose veins, and tooth abscesses - conditions that could become worse with treatment.

Don't panic though - contra-indications don't always mean you can't help your client at all. You might be able to work around the affected area or offer a different treatment instead.

Quick Tip: Remember that not all contra-indications are medical - claustrophobia is a psychological condition that could still affect treatment safety.

Contra-actions and Assessment Types

Contra-actions happen when something goes wrong during or immediately after your eyebrow shaping treatment. These reactions include allergic responses, puffy or watering eyes, skin redness, ingrown hairs, or even skin lifting and bleeding.

Erythema is the technical term for skin redness caused by increased blood flow in surface capillaries. You'll see this with any skin injury, infection, or inflammation - it's your body's natural response to trauma.

Your training involves two types of assessments: formative assessments are practice runs on peers or clients where you can learn from mistakes, whilst summative assessments are the real deal where you're assessed on actual clients for a pass or referral.

Remember: Recognising contra-actions quickly and knowing how to respond professionally is what separates skilled therapists from beginners.
