Even though La Haine tackles incredibly serious themes, Kassovitz cleverly weaves humour throughout to make his message more powerful. The character of Saïd serves as the film's main source of comic relief, constantly cracking jokes to cut through tense moments and lighten the mood.
Saïd's humour isn't just for laughs though - it's a survival mechanism that helps him and his mates deal with the harsh realities of banlieue life. His jokes become a way to fight back against the racism and social exclusion that trap residents in these housing estates.
Kassovitz also introduces the Astérix character in Paris, representing French commercial comedy and giving viewers a different perspective on suburban youth. Whilst this might seem like a small detail, it's actually vital for understanding how the director uses comedy strategically.
