The Main Trio - Core Characters

The film centres around three mates who couldn't be more different, yet share the same struggles. Vinz is the angry white Jewish lad who's basically a ticking time bomb - he's violent, aggressive, and obsessed with getting revenge on the police if his mate Abdel dies. Think of him as wannabe gangster who's watched too many films, constantly bragging about his tough-guy exploits whilst secretly buying peppers for his mum.

Hubert serves as the film's conscience and narrator. This thoughtful Black character desperately wants to escape the estates and actually helps his mum out. He's the voice of reason who tries to calm situations down, famously saying "hatred breeds hatred." Despite being the most mature of the three, he's still trapped in the same cycle of violence and desperation.

Saïd is the joker of the group - an Arab lad who uses humour to cope with their grim reality. He's the peacemaker between Vinz and Hubert, though he's also immature and doesn't respect women much. Like the others, he deals drugs and has no real future prospects.

Key Point: The trio represents "Black-Blanc-Beur" - France's three main ethnic minorities all facing the same discrimination and lack of opportunities.

Supporting Characters - Authority and Family

Nordine, Saïd's older brother, represents the estate's unofficial authority. He's the one who tries to communicate calmly with police, showing there are different ways to handle conflict. Meanwhile, Samir is a fascinating character - an Arab police officer who managed to escape the banlieues through legitimate means, though the lads don't trust him despite his attempts to help.

The most terrifying character is Notre-Dame, the plainclothes racist copper who kills Vinz in a police blunder. He embodies everything wrong with the Parisian police force and represents the institutional racism the boys face daily.

Female characters are virtually invisible in this male-dominated world. When women do appear - as mothers, sisters, or the posh birds at the art gallery - they're either doing domestic work or being disrespected. This reflects how the lads' harsh environment has shaped their attitudes towards women.

The media and journalists pop up to blame the estate residents for the riots, looking down on them with obvious superiority. They represent how mainstream French society views these communities.
