French Grammar Essentials

Present tense forms the foundation of French grammar, and the good news is that most verbs follow predictable patterns. Regular -er verbs (like parler) take endings -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent, whilst -ir verbs often add -iss- before the ending (like finir becomes finissons).

When talking about past actions, you'll mainly use two tenses. The perfect tense (passé composé) describes completed actions using avoir or être plus a past participle - think "j'ai mangé" (I have eaten). The imperfect tense describes ongoing past actions or habits, formed by taking the nous form of present tense and adding imperfect endings like -ais, -ait, -ions.

Future expressions are surprisingly straightforward. Immediate future uses aller + infinitive $je vais manger = I'm going to eat$, whilst distant future adds endings directly to the infinitive $je mangerai = I will eat$. The conditional tense works similarly but expresses "would" situations.

Reflexive verbs simply add pronouns like me, te, se before the verb to show the action affects the subject $je me lève = I get myself up$. Direct object pronouns $me, te, le/la, nous, vous, les$ replace nouns to avoid repetition and make speech flow naturally.
