Holiday Vocabulary Essentials
Ever wondered how to talk about your holidays in French? This vocab will help you describe where you've been and how you got there! Countries like l'Algรฉrie (Algeria), l'Allemagne (Germany), and l'Espagne (Spain) use different prepositions - en for feminine countries, au for masculine ones, and aux for plural countries.
When talking about destinations, you'll use je passe mes vacances (I spend my holiday) or je vais (I go) followed by places like au bord de la mer (to the seaside) or ร la montagne (to the mountains). Transport options include en avion (by plane), en train (by train), or en voiture (by car).
Time phrases are brilliant for adding detail to your stories. Use tous les ans (every year), l'annรฉe derniรจre (last year), or demain (tomorrow) to show when things happen.
Top tip: Remember that prepositions change depending on whether the country is masculine, feminine, or starts with a vowel!
GCSE Photo Card Success
Photo cards don't have to be scary when you've got the right phrases! Start strong with sur la photo (in the photo) or la photo montre (the photo shows) to get your description flowing. Il y a is your best friend for listing what you can see.
Get specific with position words to impress examiners. Use au premier plan (in the foreground), au deuxiรจme plan (in the background), ร gauche (to the left), and prรจs de (close to) to show exactly where things are located.
Don't forget the weather! Simple phrases like il y a du soleil (it's sunny) or il fait beau (it's nice weather) add extra detail. Connectives like mais (but), cependant (however), and par contre (on the other hand) will make your answers sound more sophisticated.
Exam hack: Always mention at least three specific details about position, weather, or people to show you're really looking at the photo!
Describing People and Actions
Bringing people to life in your descriptions is easier than you think! Start with basics like une femme (a woman), un garรงon (a boy), or des personnes (some people) to identify who's in your photo.
Describing emotions makes your French sound natural. Use il/elle a l'air followed by content(e) (happy), fatiguรฉ(e) (tired), or รฉnervรฉ(e) (angry). For clothing, il/elle porte is perfect for describing what people have on.
Actions are where you can really shine! The phrase il/elle est en train de works with any verb - parler (talking), manger (eating), travailler (working), or s'amuser (having fun). This structure shows ongoing actions happening right now.
Speaking confidence: Use "il/elle a l'air" instead of just "il/elle est" - it sounds more natural and shows you're observing, not just stating facts!
Essential Grammar - Verb Tenses
Mastering French verb patterns will transform your language skills! Regular verbs follow predictable patterns: -er verbs like collecter become "je collecte" (present) and "j'ai collectรฉ" (perfect), while -ir verbs like finir become "je finis" and "j'ai fini".
Irregular verbs are trickier but absolutely essential. Key ones include aller , avoir , รชtre , and faire . These pop up constantly in conversations, so they're worth memorising properly.
