French Jobs Vocabulary
Creative and Entertainment Jobs are brilliant starting points for learning French careers vocabulary. An actrice is a female actor, while acteur refers to male actors - notice how French changes word endings based on gender. Chanteur means male singer, and chanteuse is the female version.
Healthcare professions follow similar patterns with masculine and feminine forms. A médecin (doctor) stays the same for both genders, but infirmier becomes infirmière for female nurses. Vétérinaire (vet) remains unchanged regardless of gender.
Service industry jobs include coiffeur/coiffeuse (hairdresser), cuisinier/cuisinière (chef), and chauffeur de taxi (taxi driver). The professeur (teacher) can refer to any gender, whilst comptable (accountant) also stays the same.
Modern careers like designer de jeux-vidéos (video game designer) show how French adapts to new professions. Other important roles include avocat/avocate (lawyer), maçon (builder), footballeur (footballer), ingénieur (engineer), and responsable de magasin (store manager).
Top Tip: Pay attention to whether job names change for masculine/feminine forms - some do, some don't!
