French Diversity and Immigration
France has a complex relationship with immigration, with approximately 14% of its population being immigrants. Most immigrants arrive through the Mediterranean south or the north-eastern border, with the largest group (14.3%) coming from Algeria and 13% from other European Union countries. Since World War II, particularly during the "Trente Glorieuses" (thirty glorious years), France actively recruited immigrants to help with reconstruction.
Immigrants make significant economic contributions to French society. They often pay more into the system than they receive, contributing about 12 billion euros annually—approximately 2,250 euros per immigrant compared to 1,500 euros per native-born citizen. Many immigrants, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa, hold higher qualifications than commonly perceived.
Despite these contributions, racism remains prevalent in French society. Various organisations work to combat racism, particularly in sports like hockey, advocating for consistent consequences for racist behaviour. Unfortunately, residents of the banlieues (suburbs), often descendants of earlier immigrants, frequently receive poor education, creating negative stereotypes about immigrant communities.

The political landscape regarding immigration is divided. President Macron has taken a position that many consider conservative but less extreme than far-right politicians like Marine Le Pen. He also supports strengthened external border controls to reduce illegal immigration, though he acknowledges the limitations of quota systems given the open borders within the Schengen Area. The current administration has made special provisions for Ukrainian refugees following the war. Macron granted Ukrainians housing support and integration assistance, allowing them to remain in European Union countries for up to three years. This response highlights how immigration policies can vary depending on circumstances and country of origin.
Macron doesn't view immigration as inherently negative but advocates for more coordinated European approaches. He's proposed creating a Schengen Council to better protect Europe's borders and establishing consistent asylum procedures across European countries. Additionally, he supports making visas more difficult to obtain for non-EU countries that won't accept the return of citizens who've been denied asylum.
Important statistic: Only 40% of individuals who are denied entry to the European bloc actually return to their countries of origin, creating ongoing challenges for immigration enforcement.
France and the United Kingdom spend approximately 74 million euros on measures to prevent overpopulation from migration. Despite these efforts, there are over 140,000 immigrants living in France, many contributing to the cultural diversity that has enriched French society in numerous ways.
