La règle des trois unités et les conventions du théâtre classique
Au XVIIe siècle, les dramaturges français devaient se conformer à des règles d'écriture strictes, dont la plus célèbre est la règle des trois unités. Cette règle, fondamentale pour le théâtre classique, se compose de trois éléments essentiels :

L'unité de temps : L'action de la pièce ne devait pas dépasser 24 heures, limitant ainsi la durée de l'intrigue à une seule journée.

L'unité de lieu : Toute l'action devait se dérouler dans un lieu unique, comme un palais par exemple, pour maintenir la cohérence spatiale de l'œuvre.

L'unité d'action : La pièce devait se concentrer sur une seule intrigue principale, évitant ainsi les distractions et les sous-intrigues complexes.
Citation : "Qu'en un lieu, qu'en un jour, un seul fait accompli tienne jusqu'à la fin le théâtre rempli" - Boileau
Cette citation de Boileau résume parfaitement l'essence de la règle des trois unités, soulignant l'importance de la concentration temporelle, spatiale et narrative dans le théâtre classique.
En plus de la règle des trois unités, d'autres conventions importantes régissaient l'écriture théâtrale de l'époque :
La règle de bienséance : Cette règle imposait des limites strictes sur ce qui pouvait être montré sur scène. Elle interdisait toute représentation susceptible de choquer le public, notamment les scènes de violence, de sang, ou tout ce qui pourrait offenser la sensibilité religieuse. Le respect de la morale était primordial.
Citation : "Il est des objets que l'art judicieux doit offrir à l'oreille et reculer des yeux" - Boileau
Cette citation illustre parfaitement le principe de la bienséance, suggérant que certains événements devraient être rapportés plutôt que montrés directement sur scène.
La règle de vraisemblance : Cette règle exigeait que les événements et les actions représentés sur scène soient crédibles et réalistes, renforçant ainsi l'illusion théâtrale.
Highlight : Il est important de noter que ces règles, bien que largement respectées, n'étaient pas universellement acceptées. Certains dramaturges célèbres ont osé les défier, provoquant parfois des scandales.
Par exemple, Pierre Corneille a choqué le public avec sa pièce "Le Cid", notamment dans l'acte III, scène 4, où Chimène reçoit le meurtrier de son père, défiant ainsi les conventions de bienséance de l'époque.
Molière, quant à lui, a également joué avec ces règles, créant des controverses avec des pièces comme "Tartuffe" et "Don Juan", qui remettaient en question les normes sociales et morales de l'époque.
