Chapters 1-6: The Rise of Gatsby
Tom Buchanan is already cheating on his wife Daisy when we meet him in Chapter One. Meanwhile, Nick first spots the mysterious Jay Gatsby reaching towards a green light across the bay - a symbol that becomes central to the entire story.
The Valley of Ashes introduces us to a wasteland between the wealthy areas, where Tom's mistress Myrtle Wilson lives. This desolate place, watched over by the eyes of T.J. Eckleberg, represents the moral decay beneath the glamorous surface. Tom's violence towards Myrtle shows his true character when he breaks her nose during a drunken argument.
Gatsby's legendary parties finally bring him and Nick together properly. These extravagant gatherings are all part of Gatsby's plan to attract Daisy's attention. When Nick agrees to arrange their reunion in Chapter Five, we see Gatsby transform from confident host to nervous wreck - he's so anxious he nearly leaves before Daisy arrives.
Key Moment: The reunion between Gatsby and Daisy is awkward at first, but their old feelings quickly resurface. Daisy's tears over Gatsby's beautiful shirts show how his wealth impresses her.
Chapters 7-9: The Fall of the American Dream
Everything unravels in Chapter Seven during the confrontation at the Plaza Hotel. Tom exposes Gatsby's criminal connections and bootlegging operation, whilst Gatsby desperately tries to convince Daisy to say she never loved Tom. However, Daisy can't fully commit to Gatsby, leaving him devastated.
The tragic climax occurs when Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, strikes and kills Myrtle Wilson. Gatsby decides to take the blame to protect Daisy, sealing his fate. George Wilson, believing Gatsby was both his wife's killer and lover, shoots Gatsby dead in his pool before taking his own life.
Gatsby's funeral reveals the shallow nature of his social world - despite hundreds attending his parties, virtually no one comes to pay their respects. Only his father appears, proudly sharing details of his son's real identity as James Gatz and his determination to reinvent himself.
Nick's final reflection on Tom and Daisy as "careless people" who destroy lives then retreat into their wealth captures the novel's critique of the American upper class. The American Dream that Gatsby pursued so desperately proves to be an illusion that ultimately destroys him.
Final Truth: Gatsby's belief that you can repeat the past and his obsession with Daisy's wealth and status make him both sympathetic and tragic - a dreamer crushed by reality.
