Poetry analysis might seem tricky at first, but it's actually... Show more

Poetry analysis is all about digging deeper than the surface story. You're looking at how poets use special tools called poetic devices to create emotions, paint pictures in your mind, and share deeper messages.
Think of it like examining how a musician creates a song - they don't just pick random notes, they carefully choose each one to create a specific feeling. Poets do the same thing with words.
The most important poetic devices you need to know are similes (comparing things using 'like' or 'as'), metaphors (direct comparisons saying something IS something else), personification (giving human qualities to objects), alliteration (words starting with the same sound), and rhyme (similar sounds, usually at line endings). There's also rhythm - the beat or flow created by stressed and unstressed syllables.
Remember: Spotting devices isn't enough - you need to explain WHY the poet chose them and what effect they create!

Start with a first reading to get the general idea - who's speaking, what's happening, and the basic story. Don't worry about details yet, just get a feel for it.
During your second reading, slow right down and hunt for poetic devices. Use a pencil to highlight similes, metaphors, and other techniques you spot. Make notes about why the poet might have chosen specific words.
Then think about the bigger picture. What's the main theme or message? How does the poem make you feel - this is the mood or tone. Look at how it's structured too - are there verses (stanzas), does it follow a rhyme scheme?
Top tip: The second reading is where the magic happens - this is when you become that poetry detective!

PEE is your secret weapon for brilliant poetry analysis answers. It stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation - and it's the explanation bit where you'll earn the most marks.
Start with a clear Point about what the poet is doing. Then provide Evidence by quoting directly from the poem (always use quotation marks!). Finally, and most importantly, give a detailed Explanation of how that evidence proves your point and what effect it creates.
For example: "Tennyson uses personification to make the eagle seem powerful" (Point). "He writes that the eagle 'clasps the crag with crooked hands'" (Evidence). "This is effective because eagles have talons, not hands - by using 'hands', Tennyson gives the eagle human-like control and makes it seem like an ancient, powerful king ruling over the landscape" (Explanation).
Key insight: The explanation is where you show your understanding - spend most of your time on this part!

Never just 'device spot' - saying "the poet uses a simile" won't get you marks. You must explain WHY that simile works and what effect it creates for the reader.
Always quote accurately and think about individual word choices. Why did the poet pick that specific word instead of another? How does it change the feeling or image?
Remember to link everything back to the question you were asked. If it's about creating tension, focus on how the devices build suspense. If it's about showing emotion, explain how the techniques make you feel something specific.
The key things to remember are: analysis means breaking down how the poem works, poetic devices are the poet's tools, effect is what those tools create, PEE structures your answers perfectly, and always consider the overall theme and mood.
Confidence booster: Once you've practised PEE a few times, poetry analysis becomes much easier - you've got a clear method to follow every time!
