Chapter 1: A Gentleman Meets His Match
Mr. Lockwood arrives in 1801 at Thrushcross Grange, desperately seeking solitude after awkwardly hurting a woman he fancied. He's the classic repressed Victorian gentleman who finds emotions embarrassing and prefers "civilised" behaviour over messy feelings.
His first mistake? Visiting his mysterious landlord, Mr. Heathcliff, at the intimidating Wuthering Heights. The house itself screams danger—think grotesque carvings, savage dogs ready to attack, and winds so harsh they give the place its name. This isn't your typical English country manor.
Heathcliff fascinates Lockwood despite (or perhaps because of) nearly letting his dogs maul him. Described as a "dark-skinned gypsy" who somehow carries himself like a gentleman, Heathcliff embodies the novel's central tension between nature and civilisation. Where Lockwood represents stuffy Victorian society, Heathcliff is raw, wild, and connected to the brutal beauty of the Yorkshire moors.
