This poem gives you a raw look at how conflict affects everyone - not just those living through it, but those documenting it too. The photographer works alone in his darkroom, developing films from war zones like Belfast, Beirut, and Phnom Penh.
Duffy uses the darkroom as a metaphor for the photographer's mental state - it's dark, isolated, and filled with painful memories. The religious imagery ("as though this were a church") shows how seriously he takes his responsibility to tell these stories.
The photographer experiences serious internal conflict. His hands "did not tremble then" in the war zones, but they shake now in safety. This shows how trauma can hit you later, when you finally have time to process what you've seen.
Key technique alert: Notice how Duffy contrasts "Rural England" with "fields which don't explode" - this shows the massive difference between his safe home and the dangerous places he works.
