"To Autumn" uses a clever technique called apostrophe - Keats speaks directly to autumn as if it's a person who can hear him. This personification turns the season into a woman, making the poem feel intimate and personal.
Each stanza appeals to different senses in a deliberate way. The first stanza focuses on sight, painting pictures of ripening fruit and cottage trees bending under the weight of apples. The second stanza brings in touch, showing autumn sitting lazily on granary floors or watching cider being pressed.
The third stanza is all about sound - from the "wailful choir" of gnats to hedge-crickets singing and swallows gathering in the sky. Notice how Keats uses sibilance (repeated 's' sounds) throughout to create rich, flowing sounds when read aloud.
