Understanding "Tissue" by Imtiaz Dharker
Ever noticed how old book pages become almost see-through? Dharker uses this simple observation to create a powerful meditation on life's fragility and strength.
The poem opens with translucent paper that "lets the light shine through" - immediately suggesting that delicate things can be illuminating. Dharker describes aged pages from religious texts like the Koran, where families have recorded births, deaths, and personal histories. These pages become "transparent with attention" from being handled so much.
Maps and grocery receipts also feature as examples of meaningful paper. The poet suggests these everyday documents "might fly our lives like paper kites" - showing how ordinary things carry extraordinary significance. This connects to the idea that our lives, like paper, are both precious and temporary.
Key insight: The poem's quatrain structure mirrors the ordered way we try to document and understand our lives, even though everything is ultimately impermanent.
The architect metaphor in the final stanzas imagines building with paper instead of brick - creating structures "never meant to last" but filled with light and humanity. This challenges our obsession with permanent monuments to power and pride.
